Katelyn McKay {Be Featured with Haley}
This week, I am so happy to feature Katelyn McKay of “Katelyn McKay Photography.” When I first came across her photography page I
was amazed to see that she was only 14 years old, and yet has already had her own photography business up and running for a while now.
Not only is Katelyn ambitious, but her work is stunning. I can imagine her going far in the near future with her photography and can’t wait to see more of her beautiful work!
In her “Classic Dream” senior shoot, Katelyn’s work is beyond ordinary as she went above and beyond to create an enchanting shoot far from your average senior session. Katelyn added perfect whimsy touches by using neat props in the shoot, from the classic car to the vintage bike. I also love how in her photos she uses darker tint and a bolder, crisp look.

A little about Katelyn:
I’m 14 and I’m a portrait & wedding photographer, based in the capitol city of NC, Raleigh.
I truly can’t put into words exactly how blessed up I am, but I’m just astounded at God’s grace on my life and so thankful to have such a merciful savior…I’m continually amazed at who and what He brings into my life at just the perfect moment.
Somewhere in between sleek modern, and a classic touch of vintage lies my style. I usually go all out with accessorizing + fashion + all things girly one day, and the next day, pack up and go hammock camping in the middle of nowhere, but that’s just me. J Things that brighten up my life include:
+ starbucks
+ family
+ friends
+ youth group
+ photography
+ writing & receiving real letters – they’re the best!
+ camping
+ collecting vintage cameras
+ hot tea
How did you get into photography? And who encouraged you to pursue it?
The little girl who now makes my life so much brighter, (the sissy) was born in March, 2010, and I wanted to capture every detail of her little self as she grew so we could always remember how small (and cute!) she was. After a few “photo-shoots”, my mom kept encouraging me that I had a gift and I should pursue it, and it went on from there. My parents have been my support, and they have been the main reason this passion could turn into my dream + life, as they push me further in everything I do, drive me everywhere I need to go, and just bless me so incredibly much. I’m crazy blessed, truly.
What inspires you?
Magazines and movies. Catching a glimpse of lighting // locations in a certain scenes of films create sparks that lead into lots of inspiration, and seeing snapshots in magazines usually will pop out to me and get the creative wheels turning. J
Who is your favorite photographer? Or a photographer you look up to?
There’s so many crazy gifted people out there right now, it’s so hard to pick a favorite, but here’s the top five on my list :: wyn wiley // shannon lee miller // andria lidquist //benj haish //sidney morgan
What is your favorite type of photography?
Love. Capturing the love between a mama and her kiddos, or a husband and wife, they’re the same to me. Families are special to me, but there’s absolutely nothing like photographing new love + the excitement that follows. I totally connect with my seniors though, so it’s a tie between families, graduates, and couples.
How did you hear about Delight and what are you most excited about delight?
I saw the posts leading up to the PTL retreat in the Pursuit 31 group, and though I unfortunately couldn’t make it to that retreat, I’m so pumped about this year’s retreat!
What do you like about delight?
I love the inspiration that these girls give to each other, and the drive to push each other farther along to pursing our dreams. It’s incredible that God has brought all these girls together to follow the passion He’s placed in each of our hearts and the encouragement each of us gives to each other. I’m so blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing, talented girls.

“Classic Dreams” (Senior Session)
About the Shoot:
How did you come up with the idea or what inspired you to do this shoot?
-Gloria had been talking about wanting a classic shoot, going along the lines of vintage, but classy. Kind of old new York, in a way, but incorporating old cars + a bike. We went from there and so many ideas came to both of us, and the end result is one of my favorite sessions!
Who helped you put it together or how did you think of the idea?
-Gloria put together all of her wardrobe, some new friends of ours opened up their home to us and let us use their 3 cars, and they called up a friend of theirs who let us use her home dating back to 1802.
Who were your models?
-Gloria was actually the senior, we just collaborated and created the idea together to get exactly what she wanted.
Would you ever do another shoot like this one? If so, what kind of shoot would you like to do next?
-Absolutely! I’m planning it with my models right now, but my hopes are to do a sunset rooftop engagement/love shoot in the next few months – super excited about planning the details for that!
