Divorce hurts, God heals
by: Kelly Lynne
Divorce affects everyone, not just the parents who are divorcing. My parents divorced when I was 12 years old. Being a teenager is hard enough but then your parents divorcing and your mom moving you 3000 miles away and you feel crushed. So many emotions running through me, I felt scared, alone, angry, guilty and lost. My world would never be the same.
I was treading water but God was there with the lifeboat ready to pull me out of the freezing water. He sent me a Christian friend. Her mother was a single mom trying to survive and take care of her two children. She would drop us all off at the Baptist church on Wednesday nights. The youth leaders were amazing and shared the love of Christ with me. They became my family when I felt like my biological family was falling apart. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, “says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” This became the verse I went to when I was feeling down or scared of where the future was taking me. God became my hope!
God has a plan and I truly believe everything happens for a reason. The experiences we go through shape up and grow us into the people God wants us to be. My experience growing up in a divorced family helped me years later when I would meet and marry my husband that had two children age 7 and 11. I was able to be an understanding stepmother because I understood my stepchildren. I was able to ease their fear and let them know I was not trying to take their mothers place but just there to love their dad and to love them. The things we go through even as teenagers can be used for God’s glory to be the light and shine in someone else’s life. To ease someone else’s pain and in doing so it helps ease our pain a little.
If your parents are divorced or are going through a divorce let me share with you some things I have learned: don’t feel like you have to take sides. You can love both of your parents equally. Pray for your parents, also pray for God to comfort you. Talk to other trusted adults like your youth leaders or pastor. Find someone to talk to don’t hold it all in. You can even reach out to me or the lovely ladies here at Delight and Be. Don’t go it alone. Remember God loves you!!
Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
