What is a Prism?

A Prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. Or as I like to call it, a “triangle that reflects.”

I use a 6 inch prism. You can buy one here.

What do you use a prism for in photography?

Use it to make creative images by adding texture and unique flares.

How can I create that effect?

So when you get your new prism, and you have your favorite lens on (they say a 50mm or wider works best, but this is photography – do we ever follow the rules?), and you’re all ready to go, hold the prism up to your lens. I put it right up on my lens (be careful not to scratch your lens), then I choose where I want the “flare” (top, bottom, corner, side…), then I twist the prism to my favorite reflection. Keep an eye on what the reflection is because sometimes it’s not all that great (like your feet), then shoot away. Really, you just have to play around with it! There is no right or wrong way to use a prism in photography.

*BONUS TIP!

You don’t have to have a prism to be cool! All you need is a little creativity. Flowers, broken glass, plastic bags, etc. are all great things to replace a prism. I once used my clear phone case, so your options are limitless.
