The moment came so unexpectedly.
I was driving home from bible study, refreshed by God’s word, feeling energized to see God in new ways this season, to live simpler, and pursue peace.
It was nighttime, and I was exiting around the curve of the road that means I’m almost home, taillights and stop lights blinking red.
It was that moment that I tried to go inside of my mind, to a place where I typically swirl into streams of anxiety. And it was there, that I felt a wall in my mind.
It was God, standing there, still.
I’ve never had a moment like it before – it felt supernatural. God was literally guarding my mind with His peace. And for days, I couldn’t even think an anxious thought. The anxiety that has come in and out of my life from wanting to please, wanting to listen to all the other voices.
When we start pursuing peace in our lives, we are going to have some resistance. When we tell the enemy that we cannot think the way we thought, start listening for God’s voice, and trusting Him instead, we will be tested.
But there, that night, with lights blinking red, I saw clearly that God will fight for us.
“God will fight for us, and you need only to be still.”
– Exodus 14:14
God protects the space in us when we don’t know how to protect it ourselves. He fights for us when we don’t know how to. Because He wants to be with us, He wants to speak to us. And what Jesus did for us on that cross, shows us that He will stop at nothing to pursue our hearts.
Our daily work is to pursue Him by tuning to a new frequency, to hear Him above all of the other voices we’ve listened to for so long.
Unlike the other voices, His is soft, gentle. Like the humming of the wind or the rolling of the waves.
It isn’t until we try to tune to His voice that we realize how loud the other voices have become. They’re screaming to us in our homes and communities, on social media. Our text messages are blinking, beeping, blinking, beeping. And there’s a part of us too, that craves it – craves to be connected to the voices, craves their affirmation to assure us that we are doing the right thing.
But what is right for you, darling? What does God want for your life?
I read this last week in Psalm 33:11-12:
“The LORD looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men.
From the place of His dwelling He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth;
He fashions their hearts individually;
He considers all their works…
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope in His mercy.”
The LORD’s eye is on you, sweet girl. Rest in this today. He has plans for your heart that others will just not understand. The seasons He will ask you to walk through, His plans for your life, He’s fashioning them just for you.
So listening to the other voices – it isn’t always helpful. Not everyone will be able to guide you with Godly counsel. Because they haven’t walked your path. But God is so gracious, He will never leave you alone. He will send people who do guide you unto Him.
And still He asks us to take the inner journey, to get in touch with our tender places, and to just listen to our inner voice. To re-tune to its frequency. The one that whispers to you, in the same low hum that God’s is whispering. The voice that tells us what’s right, the voice that dreams, the voice that knows it has a place in the world.
The hardest thing to do sometimes, is to trust our inner voice. I know, sweet girl, I know. I’m still learning to trust that my voice carries more than enough truth and light. But here’s the beautiful thing: as we pursue His voice, our inner voice begins to align with His. They will hum together in a melodious tune, one that will carry His peace and rest for our souls.
As we close this month on peace, let’s do the daily work together, to create space to tune our minds to His voice and His peace. You can rest in knowing He will fight for you and protect you, darling; as He fashions a beautiful path that only you can walk with Him.
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;
neither shall anyone snatch ether out of my hand.”
-John 10:27-28
