Luke 16:10-12 (The Message):
“Jesus went on to make these comments:
If you’re honest in small things,
you’ll be honest in big things;
If you’re a crook in small things,
you’ll be a crook in big things.
If you’re not honest in small jobs,
who will put you in charge of the store?”
Do you often find yourself saying ‘I can’t wait until ________’? Maybe you can’t wait until you can drive or until you get to high school or until you graduate from college. Or maybe you can’t wait until you’re a big successful (fill in the blank with whatever you want to do). We can easily look at those who are successful in their fields and wish we could be there RIGHT. NOW. But there’s a process. It would be foolish for a child to start Kindergarten on a Monday and graduate high school the following Friday, right?
In order to move on to the next subject in school you have to master the current one. Before you learn to multiply and divide, it helps to know how to add and subtract! In life, that translates to mastering your current season before moving onto the next – being faithful with where you are right now (aka ‘the little things’) and showing that you are fully capable to handle more (aka ‘the big things’)! It’s like learning how to juggle. Once you’re a master at keeping two balls in the air, you’re ready to add a third.
So what does that look like? Take a minute to think about all of your current responsibilities. What would you consider your current ‘jobs’ to be? If it’s school, do you approach it from the standpoint of giving it your best effort or do you have the mentality that you only have to do enough to ‘get by’? Do you have chores at home? I wonder what would happen if you suddenly approached them in the same way you would approach your ‘dream job’. Instead of just quickly doing the dishes, maybe take the extra initiative to sweep the floor too. Or clean the sink when you’re finished.
As the verse says “If you’re not honest in small jobs, who will put you in charge of the store?”. Showing faithfulness in the everyday little things proves that you’re ready to move on. I challenge you to take your life to the next level by raising the standard in areas that are currently so-so. It may not seem like sweeping the floor in addition to doing the dishes is that big of a deal, but it will start to change your overall perspective and that will spill into all areas of your life!
