If you’re anything like me you suffer from ‘visual distraction syndrome’. I can go from being totally focused on the friend sitting across from me at the table at Starbucks, to daydreaming about how amazing a photo session would be with the googley-eyed couple sitting at the table next to us in 2.5 seconds – if not quicker. (It’s not awkward or creepy to stare at random strangers in public is it?!?)
If I’m not careful this ‘syndrome’ can be quite hazardous to my health. Have you ever noticed how you tend to move toward what you’re focused on? Stare too long at a potential new shooting location as you drive by it and find yourself veering ever so slightly to that side of the road. Or if you don’t drive, try walking down a sidewalk while you look at the trees and flowers to the right or left of you. Even if you actually are able to stay straight on the sidewalk, chances are you will eventually run into something or someone. What you set your sight on is extremely important.
Proverbs 29:18:
“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” (KJV)
“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.” (NIV)
“If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.” (The Message)
We’ve talked the past few weeks about finding your ideal client and developing your brand but none of it really matters if you haven’t gotten clear vision and direction from God about it all! He has given you these gifts to glorify Him and be a blessing to others. If you haven’t already done it, ask God to show you HIS vision for the gifts HE has given you!
What is your ‘mission’? What is the ‘heart’ of your business? Once God gives it to you, write it down and plaster it wherever you make decisions about your biz. Let His vision be the foundation for every decision you make about pricing, session ideas, etc. PRAY about it ALL. As simple as that sounds it can be so easy for us to try to figure it all out ourselves or to read 100 blogs on the topic and end up stressed and confused. It’s important to educate ourselves and learn what we can…but let the final decisions come down to what you hear from God.
Once you know the ‘restraints’ (guideline) of your vision it will be much easier to stick to it – and you can rest in knowing it’s what God has for you! AND when we find our significance and sense of purpose in Him, the frustrations and disappointments that can be part of this industry don’t have the same affect on us. It’s our little God-bubble of protection!
Luke 12:7 says the very hairs on your head are numbered. God cares about the details of your life and wants to be part of each and every one of them – big or small! All we have to do is invite Him in :)
