I fell in love with photography when I was 15, and my mom gave my my first camera. It wasn’t until years later when my hubby surprised me with my first DSLR camera that I realized I could make my passion into my profession. But that’s not to say that I was able to just jump into things. Starting a business is hard work! Here are a few of the things that helped me to get my business on it’s feet, as well as some things I wish I’d known at the time.
Get to know other photographers
Other, more experienced photographers can be some of your greatest resources when you’re starting out, and there are so many photography groups out there! I mean seriously, they’ve already been where you are, so why not learn from them? Don’t be afraid to find someone that is willing to mentor you, that you can ask questions and get advice from. A lot of photographers (myself included) offer mentoring sessions, teach workshops, and have plenty of second shooter opportunities to help you get experience. So get out there and network!
Brand yourself
Lets face it, in today’s technologically advanced world, anyone can pick up a camera and call themselves a photographer. It’s the sad truth. So how do you stand out in the crowd? You brand YOURSELF! After all, everyone is offering the same product (of varying quality and style granted, but still) but what’s the one thing that none of them have? YOU! If you focus on selling yourself instead of your photos, and creating a good relationship with your clients, you’ll be able to attract clientele that want YOU, not just any old photographer. I’ll do another blog post soon with tips on how to do just that, so stay tuned!
Remember that no one is perfect!
When you’re having one of those days when you’re doubting yourself and your artistic ability (because believe me, we all have those!), remember that no one is perfect. Even the greatest photographers had to start somewhere. Even the greatest photographers at some point doubted themselves, their talent, their ability to run a successful business. And always remember that you are not alone! There are so many more people out there that are in the same boat as you. So why not take the time to encourage each other?
And of course, like I always say, I can’t post anything without a photo, so here’s a sneak peek at my latest session!
Love, McKenna

I find myself trying to find someone else photographic style. I have a hard time looking for my own. I know what I like, but live in fear that no one else will. But that’s not what really matters, as long as I am glorifying God, I can use my style.
Thanks for these wep awesome tips, and all of it is so true !

McKenna is an amazing person with talent to boot. What she says about marketing herself is spot on. In all honesty, I prefer to work with her than a photographer in my own family… simply because of who she is! She has a heart and a client can sense that right away. My kids especially loved her. Kudos!
