“Waiting on God’s Timing”
by: Gabrielle Von Heynking
In the Pursuit of God I found my husband. I am not the typical 21st century girl. I didn’t date or have different boyfriends all throughout highschool. I didn’t kiss anyone until I met my husband. But today that’s not what I want to talk with you about. Just because I didn’t casually date or just because my husband was the first guy I kissed doesn’t mean that I am perfect or that I didn’t make any mistakes along the way.
In highschool I was very involved in my local church’s youth group and the opportunity was often presented to me to date guys within the youth group. I knew though that I was different and that God had called me to hold myself to a different standard. When I was 14 I prayed to God that He would give me a dream or a vision of what my husband would be like…what he might look like, so that when I did meet him one day I would know the search was over. God answered my prayer and gave me a dream where I couldn’t see the face of my husband, but I could see that he was leading worship in front of a crowd and I could see what the stage looked like.
It was after this dream that the temptation to not hold out for that man, but to start dating guys in my youth group really started flooding in. That temptation came in the form of two very persistent guys and I would be lying if I tried to say that I didn’t at all entertain the thought of seriously dating one of them, but after forming a friendship with this guy I soon realized that being with him was not what God had for me. I quickly backed off of that friendship because I was that girl that was SO scared of ever possibly giving a guy the wrong idea if I knew I wasn’t going to end up marrying him.
In my senior year of highschool, I met a guy that seemed to somewhat match up with the dream God had given me when I was 14. I ignored the warning signs going off in my head and started a casual friendship with him where we hung out a few times and texted back and forth. He finally got to the point though where he wanted something more and I started thinking to myself, “well what if he isn’t the one and then I totally invest myself in a relationship with him only to find out several months, or several years down the line that he is not my husband,” needless to say I knew if that happened I would feel horrible and would have great regret for hurting someone in that way, so I stopped our casual friendship.
After my senior year in highschool, I moved three hours away from my parents to attend a 9 month Bible College program and I couldn’t help but think to myself that a Bible College would be the perfect place to meet a husband. However that wasn’t in God’s plan for my life. For the vast majority of that year I stuck to just enjoying my year and trying to soak up as much as I could, I did have some friends that were guys, but I viewed them more as brothers than as potential husbands. I returned to my hometown somewhat dissapointed that I still hadn’t met this guy that I had been holding out for for four years.
I remember thinking to myself,”am I EVER going to meet my husband, does he even exist?” You see all the time that I wasn’t dating…I spent searching for that special guy, I would see a guy and think,”oh is he the one….he kind of fits the description of the guy from my dream.” Instead of being patient and trusting in God to show me my husband in His timing, I was trying to find that person in my timing. I didn’t like being lonely and always being the girl that didn’t have a boyfriend or wasn’t dating, but I was stubborn and clung to God’s promise!
When I got back from Bible College I resolved to stop looking and to just let God reveal my husband to me when He was ready, in His timing. A few weeks before my 18th birthday a guy from Canada moved down to my city to work on a worship album with the worship leader at my church. The first Sunday I saw him I thought he was very cute and I wanted to get to know him right away….but I quickly became worried he was taken when I saw the girl sitting next to him give him a hug (I later realized that girl was his sister lol.). The next week I saw him at church leading worship and I had my moment! The moment in my dream was finally happening in front of my very eyes, I was staring at my husband and I knew in my heart that He was the one God had picked out for me. It was the most amazing feeling because when I finally had learned to be content on my own and stop searching for every guy I met to be my husband, God revealed my husband to me.
I wrote all of this to encourage you to be patient and wait for God’s timing. Things may not happen as quickly as you want them too or when you want them too, but it is because God’s timing is greater than yours or mine. He has a plan for our lives and for when things are supposed to happen, whether it is meeting the man who is going to be your husband or booking your first wedding :) The verse that helped me get through that whole period of waiting and being frustrated with being single was, Jeremiah 29:11,”For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to bring you the hope and future you long for.”

I absolutely loved reading this and hope that it helps others be so patient with Gods plan. Thanks for sharing your story Gabrielle!
Such a sweet story, Gabrielle. You are such an encouragement to so many single girls.
I’ve always felt the way you did. I don’t like casually dating – especially when I know fairly quickly the guy is wrong for me. I’m saving my heart for the right one. The big difference is… I’m 48-years-old and still waiting for God to bring that special someone.
For the older single women who may be reading this… don’t be tempted to settle for less than God’s best for you. He loves you so much and has something special lined up for you. You can trust Him with all your heart.
Aww! I love this story! Such a sweet encouragement!
